Chain length

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004242

The average number of times the propagation cycle of a chemical chain reaction repeats for each initiating radical. In atmospheric chemistry, it measures the efficiency of catalytic processes, such as the destruction of stratospheric ozone by chlorine radicals or the oxidation of volatile organic compounds in the troposphere. A long chain length signifies that a single radical can cause the transformation of thousands of other molecules before the reaction is terminated.
