The family of odd hydrogen radicals, consisting primarily of the hydroxyl radical (OH) and the hydroperoxyl radical (HO2). These highly reactive species are central to atmospheric chemistry, controlling the oxidative capacity of the troposphere and stratosphere, especially during the day. They initiate the oxidation of most trace gases, including methane and volatile organic compounds, and participate in catalytic cycles that produce and destroy ozone.
