Chlorine monoxide radical
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004284
A highly reactive chemical species with the formula ClO, consisting of one chlorine atom and one oxygen atom with an unpaired electron. It is a key intermediate in the catalytic destruction of stratospheric ozone, primarily formed from the breakdown of chlorofluorocarbons and other chlorine-containing compounds. Its concentration increases significantly in the polar stratosphere during ozone hole formation.
