Chlorine dioxide
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004282
A chemical compound with the formula ClO₂, which is a strong oxidizing agent and a free radical. In the stratosphere, chlorine dioxide is formed through reactions involving chlorine monoxide and ozone, and it participates in catalytic cycles that destroy stratospheric ozone. While not as abundant as other chlorine species, its presence indicates active ozone depletion chemistry.
