Chlorine compounds

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004281

A group of chemical species containing chlorine atoms that participate in atmospheric chemical reactions, particularly those leading to stratospheric ozone depletion. These compounds originate from both natural sources, such as volcanic eruptions, and anthropogenic sources, including chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and other industrial chemicals. In the stratosphere, ultraviolet radiation breaks down stable source gases, releasing reactive chlorine atoms that catalytically destroy ozone molecules.
