Heterogeneous chemistry
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006231
Chemical reactions occurring at the interface between two different phases, such as between a gas and a liquid aerosol or a solid ice particle. These reactions are distinct from gas-phase homogeneous chemistry and are central to atmospheric processes like stratospheric ozone depletion on polar stratospheric clouds. For example, reactions on the surface of sulfate aerosols convert inactive chlorine compounds into reactive forms that catalytically destroy ozone.
