Stratospheric sulfate layer

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009304

A persistent aerosol layer located in the lower stratosphere, primarily composed of sulfuric acid droplets. This layer forms from the oxidation of sulfur-containing gases, such as sulfur dioxide and carbonyl sulfide, which are transported into the stratosphere. Volcanic eruptions are a major natural source of these gases, leading to temporary enhancements in the layer's optical depth and radiative forcing.
