Stratospheric steering

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009303

The influence of stratospheric wind patterns on the movement and development of weather systems in the troposphere. Strong stratospheric circulations, such as the polar vortex, can modulate the propagation of planetary waves and affect the intensity and trajectory of surface weather. This interaction is a key aspect of troposphere-stratosphere coupling.
