Steering flow

The ambient large-scale atmospheric current that dictates the movement of smaller weather systems embedded within it. This flow is typically represented by the mean wind velocity over a certain atmospheric layer. The direction and speed of a tropical cyclone, for instance, are largely determined by the surrounding steering flow.
