Steering
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009243
The process by which large-scale atmospheric flow patterns influence the movement of smaller weather systems, such as hurricanes or mid-latitude cyclones. These larger patterns, often represented by upper-level winds, dictate the general direction and speed of the embedded features. The 500-millibar height contours are frequently used to estimate the steering flow for tropical cyclones.
