Arctic stratospheric vortex

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003615

A large-scale, persistent cyclonic circulation of air in the stratosphere over the Arctic region during the winter months. This vortex isolates the air within it, leading to very low temperatures that facilitate the formation of polar stratospheric clouds. These clouds are instrumental in the chemical reactions that deplete stratospheric ozone.
