Antarctic stratospheric vortex
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003547
A large-scale, persistent cyclonic circulation in the middle and lower stratosphere that forms over Antarctica during the polar winter and spring. This vortex isolates the air mass over the pole, allowing temperatures to drop low enough for the formation of polar stratospheric clouds. These clouds provide surfaces for chemical reactions that lead to the rapid destruction of ozone when sunlight returns in the spring.
