Stratospheric warming

A rapid and substantial increase in temperature within the polar stratosphere, particularly during winter months. This phenomenon is caused by the breakdown of the stratospheric polar vortex, often triggered by upward-propagating planetary waves from the troposphere. Such warming events can influence tropospheric weather patterns for several weeks following their occurrence.
