Polar stratospheric clouds

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008031

Clouds that form in the lower stratosphere at very low temperatures, typically below -78 degrees Celsius, over the polar regions during winter. These clouds are composed of ice crystals or supercooled nitric acid and water droplets. They provide surfaces for chemical reactions that lead to ozone depletion, particularly in the Antarctic ozone hole.
