Antarctic ozone hole

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003544

A severe depletion of stratospheric ozone over the Antarctic continent that occurs annually during the Southern Hemisphere spring (September to November). This phenomenon is primarily caused by chemical reactions involving human-made chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and polar stratospheric clouds in the extremely cold polar vortex. It results in significantly increased ultraviolet radiation reaching the surface.
