Antarctic Zone

The southernmost oceanographic region of the Southern Ocean, located south of the Antarctic Polar Front. This zone is characterized by extremely cold surface waters, low salinity, and extensive seasonal sea ice coverage that persists for much of the year. It is the area where Antarctic Bottom Water, the coldest and densest water mass in the global ocean, begins its formation.
