Antecedent
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003549
The pre-existing environmental conditions of the atmosphere, soil, or a water body before a specific meteorological event occurs. These conditions influence the development and impact of the subsequent event, such as how antecedent soil moisture affects the amount of runoff generated by a rainstorm. Hydrologic models use antecedent precipitation indices to estimate current basin conditions for flood forecasting.
