Antecedent soil moisture
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003551
The amount of water present in the soil prior to a particular meteorological event, such as a new rainfall or snowmelt period. This moisture content influences how much additional water the soil can absorb before runoff begins. High antecedent soil moisture increases the likelihood of flooding from subsequent precipitation.
