Soil moisture deficit
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009015
The amount of water required to bring the soil moisture content up to its field capacity, representing the difference between the current moisture level and the maximum amount the soil can hold against gravity. This deficit indicates the dryness of the soil and its capacity to absorb further precipitation. It is often expressed in millimeters of water.
