Available soil moisture

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003735

The amount of water held in the soil that is accessible to plants for transpiration. It represents the difference between the water content at field capacity, the maximum amount of water the soil can hold against gravity, and the permanent wilting point, below which plants cannot extract water. This quantity is expressed as a depth of water per unit depth of soil, such as millimeters per meter, or as a percentage of volume.
