Moisture equivalent

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-001753

  1. The amount of water retained by a soil sample after being saturated and then subjected to a specific centrifugal force, typically 1000 times the force of gravity, for a set period. This value provides an estimate of the water held by the soil against gravity, indicating its water-holding capacity. It is expressed as a percentage of the oven-dry weight of the soil.

  2. In hydrologic terms, the ratio of the weight of water which the soil, after saturation, will retain against a centrifugal force 1,000 times the force of gravity, to the weight of the soil when dry. The ratio is stated as a percentage.
