Moisture factor

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010626

The ambient atmospheric moisture that governs how wet or dry wildland fuels become, used in fire weather and represented by relative humidity or by dew point depression. Low ambient moisture dries fuels and speeds fire spread. The Haines Index combines a moisture factor, taken from the dew point depression at 850 or 700 hectopascals, with a stability factor taken from the temperature difference between two levels, and rates each from 1 to 3.
