Buildup index
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004069
A numerical index used in fire weather forecasting to estimate the cumulative effect of drying on forest fuels. It reflects the moisture content of the deep organic layers of the forest floor. A higher build-up index indicates drier fuels and a greater potential for large, intense wildfires, often calculated using daily temperature and precipitation data.
