Freezing index

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005769

A cumulative measure of the duration and intensity of freezing temperatures over a specific period, often a winter season. It is calculated by summing the products of daily mean air temperature (if below freezing) and the number of days. This index is used in engineering to assess frost penetration depth in soils and in hydrology to estimate ice formation in water bodies.
