Thawing index

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009572

A measure of the magnitude and duration of above-freezing temperatures over a defined period, typically a year. It is calculated by summing the positive daily mean temperature departures from 0°C (32°F) for all days in the thawing season. The resulting value, expressed in degree-days, is used in engineering and permafrost studies to estimate the depth of seasonal ground thaw.
