A layer of permafrost that has survived one or more thaw seasons, remaining frozen beneath an active layer that thaws annually. This relict permafrost indicates areas where the thermal regime is close to the freezing point, allowing for intermittent thawing and refreezing cycles. Its presence is a key indicator of periglacial environments.
