Passive permafrost

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007818

Permafrost that is no longer in equilibrium with the current climate conditions, meaning it is slowly degrading or thawing due to a warming trend. This type of permafrost is often a relict from a colder past climate and is not actively forming or maintaining its frozen state under present conditions. Its presence indicates past environmental conditions that were more conducive to permafrost formation.
