Permafrost island

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007863

An isolated patch of perennially frozen ground surrounded by unfrozen soil or water. These features are found in regions where the general climate is too warm to sustain continuous permafrost, but local conditions, such as elevation or vegetation cover, allow for its persistence. They are remnants of past colder climates or form in specific microclimates, often found in peatlands or high-latitude wetlands.
