Talik

A layer or body of unfrozen ground within, between, or beneath permafrost. These features occur where a local heat source, such as a deep lake, a river, or groundwater flow, prevents the ground from freezing completely. Taliks can be open (connected to the surface), closed (entirely surrounded by permafrost), or through (connecting suprapermafrost and subpermafrost zones), with thicknesses ranging from meters to hundreds of meters.
