Suprapermafrost layer

The active layer of soil or sediment situated above permafrost that undergoes seasonal thawing and freezing. Its thickness varies depending on local climate, vegetation, and soil properties, ranging from a few centimeters to several meters. This layer is where most biological and hydrological processes occur in permafrost regions.
