Passive cloud
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007817
A cloud with no buoyant updraft of its own, such as the decaying remnant of a cumulus that spreads out beneath an inversion and drifts with the surrounding air. Passive clouds are contrasted with active clouds, in which latent heat release makes the cloud air positively buoyant and keeps the updraft going. Large-eddy simulations of cumulus separate the two by whether the cloud air is positively buoyant.
