Precipitation aloft
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008103
Precipitation that forms within a cloud but evaporates or sublimates before reaching the Earth's surface. This phenomenon, often visible as virga, is common in dry atmospheric layers below the cloud base. It can contribute to cooling and moistening of the sub-cloud layer, potentially influencing subsequent cloud development or downdrafts.
