Precipitation trails

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008118

Streaks of precipitation, often ice crystals or snowflakes, that fall from a cloud but evaporate before reaching the ground. These trails are visible as wispy, downward-extending features, particularly from cirrus or altocumulus clouds. They are also known as virga and indicate dry air below the cloud base.
