Precipitation trajectory

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010680

The three-dimensional path traced by a hydrometeor, such as a raindrop or snowflake, as it falls from a cloud to the Earth's surface. This path is determined by the particle's terminal velocity and the horizontal winds it encounters at different altitudes during its descent. Analyzing these trajectories provides insight into the source regions of precipitation and the atmospheric processes affecting particles in transit, such as melting or evaporation.
