Floccus
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005629
A cloud species characterized by tufts of cumuliform cloud with ragged, shredded-looking bases. These tufts are individual elements that can be arranged in lines or patches and are frequently associated with virga, which are precipitation trails that evaporate before reaching the ground. Floccus formations indicate instability at the cloud level and are seen with cirrus, cirrocumulus, altocumulus, and stratocumulus clouds.
