Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009295
A cloud species characterized by its formation into extensive horizontal sheets or layers. This species name is applied to altocumulus, stratocumulus, and sometimes cirrocumulus clouds when they spread out over a large area of the sky. Stratiformis clouds indicate stable atmospheric conditions and are often associated with the large-scale lifting of an air mass, such as ahead of a warm front.
