Castellanus
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004193
A cloud species distinguished by vertically developed, turret-like protuberances that rise from a common, lower-level base. These formations indicate instability in the middle levels of the troposphere and are a precursor to thunderstorm development. Castellanus clouds appear with genera such as altocumulus, stratocumulus, cirrocumulus, and sometimes cumulus.
