Cassegrainian telescope

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004192

A type of reflecting telescope that uses a large concave primary mirror and a smaller convex secondary mirror to form an image. Light reflects from the primary mirror onto the secondary, which then reflects the light back through a hole in the center of the primary mirror to a focal point behind it. This folded optical path results in a compact instrument with a long focal length, making it suitable for atmospheric remote sensing instruments like lidar systems mounted on aircraft or satellites.
