Sylvanshine
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009466
An optical phenomenon consisting of the bright, mirror-like reflection of sunlight or moonlight from the foliage of trees and plants. This specular reflection occurs when light strikes the waxy cuticles of leaves at a specific angle relative to the observer, creating a collective glint similar to sunglint on a water surface. The effect is most pronounced when viewing a distant forest canopy from an elevated position, with the sun or moon behind the observer.
