Describing a layer of cloud, fog, or haze with very little vertical extent and low optical depth. Such a layer appears translucent, allowing the sun, moon, or surface features to be seen through it, although with reduced clarity. For example, thin cirrostratus clouds can produce a halo effect around the sun or moon, indicating the presence of ice crystals.
