Corona
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-000589
A luminous atmospheric optical phenomenon appearing as a set of colored rings or a colored disk immediately surrounding the sun or moon when viewed through a thin cloud. It is caused by the diffraction of light by uniform-sized water droplets or ice crystals in the cloud. The colors are typically arranged with blue or violet on the inside and red on the outside.
1. The outermost layer of the solar atmosphere, characterized by low densities (< 1.0x10^9/cc) and high temperatures (> 1.0x10^6 K).
2. In solar-terrestrial terms, a white or colored circle or set of concentric circles of light of small radius seen around a luminous body, especially around the sun or moon. The color varies from blue inside to red outside and the phenomenon is attributed to diffraction of light by thin clouds or mist (distinguished from halo).
