  1. An optical phenomenon appearing as one or more concentric rings of colored light, centered on the observer's antisolar point, typically seen when looking down upon clouds or fog from above. It is caused by the backscattering of sunlight by water droplets within the cloud. The colors are arranged with blue on the inside and red on the outside.

  2. An optical effect characterized by concentric rings of color (red outermost and violet innermost) surrounding the shadow of an observer's head when the shadow is cast onto a cloud deck below the observer's elevation (see Brocken specter).
