Diffraction phenomenon

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005000

Any observable effect of waves bending around obstacles or through openings, including the spreading of waves into regions that would otherwise be shadowed. In the atmosphere, diffraction of light by uniform cloud droplets produces coronas around the Sun or Moon, and it contributes to the glory seen around the antisolar point. Smaller droplets give larger corona rings, so the ring size indicates the droplet size.
