Bottlinger's rings

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003989

A rare atmospheric optical phenomenon consisting of a series of colored rings observed around the sun or moon, similar to a corona but with a much larger angular radius. They are caused by the diffraction of light by extremely uniform, spherical ice crystals in the atmosphere. These rings are distinct from halos, which are caused by refraction.
