Bottom current
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003990
A flow of water moving along the floor of an ocean, sea, or lake. These currents are driven by density gradients resulting from temperature and salinity differences (thermohaline circulation), tidal forces, or the interaction of surface circulation with seafloor topography. Bottom currents are capable of transporting large amounts of sediment and shaping features on the seabed.
