Gradient current
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006016
An ocean current driven by horizontal differences in water density, which create pressure gradients within the water column. These density variations arise from differences in temperature and salinity, leading to a slope in the isobaric surfaces. The current flows perpendicular to the pressure gradient, balanced by the Coriolis force, and is a key component of large-scale ocean circulation.
