Slope of an isobaric surface

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008941

The inclination of a surface of constant atmospheric pressure relative to a horizontal plane. This slope is directly related to the horizontal pressure gradient force, which drives atmospheric motion. In the Northern Hemisphere, air tends to flow parallel to isobars with lower pressure to the left, and the slope indicates the direction and magnitude of this pressure gradient.
