Isobaric vorticity

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006686

The component of atmospheric vorticity calculated on an isobaric surface, representing the local rotation of the air flow at a constant pressure level. This quantity is a key diagnostic tool in meteorology for identifying and tracking atmospheric disturbances, such as troughs and ridges. Positive isobaric vorticity is often associated with upward vertical motion and cyclonic development.
