Isobaric-isosteric solenoid

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010565

A closed curve formed by the intersection of an isobaric surface (constant pressure) and an isosteric surface (constant specific volume) in a thermodynamic diagram or atmospheric cross-section. The number of these solenoids in a given area is proportional to the baroclinicity of the atmosphere. They indicate the presence and strength of atmospheric fronts and jet streams.
