Total vorticity

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009724

The sum of the relative vorticity and the planetary vorticity at a given point in the atmosphere. Relative vorticity describes the local rotation of a fluid parcel with respect to the Earth's surface, while planetary vorticity accounts for the rotation of the Earth itself. Conservation of total vorticity is a fundamental principle in large-scale atmospheric dynamics.
